Hey Y’all!
It’s been a while since I’ve done any creative writing. While this may not strictly be creative, it certainly feels that way to me. These days, my writing is usually within a medical context. So, tapping into my mind and letting words flow without structure is daunting. I have thoughts to express all day, but find it easier to share them with a specific person or group rather than with passers-by online.
I never imagined I’d be in this position—using my writing to reach out to others, hoping to provide knowledge and nuance about the ever-changing field of nutrition and its effects on human biology; with a side of millennial humor.
So to that, I welcome you to my website, that feels like it’s an ever-evolving platform.
I’m currently offering my cash-pay nutrition services via telehealth that you can purchase off this website.
Although I am also in the process of getting credentialed with local commercial insurances based out of Delaware, as well looking to become an in-network provider with Medicare as well.
I’m hoping this blog will be a space where I can offer some insight into my thoughts surrounding my knowledge and continued experience in specializing in weight management.
If you suffer from chronic health conditions that are impacted by weight or have had your weight impacted by certain chronic health conditions, rest assured that I am here to help you regain control on what may seem to be uncontrollable.
If you are currently suffering or are seeking to prevent the progression of any conditions below and are looking for a step forward in the right direction, definitely don’t hesitate to book your initial consult. Of course, my services aren’t limited to these conditions solely, and that’s why my initial consult is listed on my services page.
Chronic diseases that are impacted by or can impact obesity.
Type 2 Diabetes
Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Excess fat, especially visceral fat, leads to insulin resistance, which can progress to type 2 diabetes.
Managing weight can significantly improve blood sugar control and reduce the need for medications in individuals with diabetes.
Cardiovascular Diseases
Conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and stroke are closely linked to obesity. Excess weight increases the strain on the heart and blood vessels, leading to these complications.
Weight loss can improve cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and reducing inflammation.
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
Obesity is the most common cause of NAFLD, which can progress to more severe liver conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Weight reduction through diet and exercise is the primary treatment for NAFLD.
Osteoarthritis
Obesity increases the risk of osteoarthritis, particularly in weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips. Excess weight puts additional stress on the joints, leading to wear and tear.
Weight loss can reduce joint pain and improve mobility in individuals with osteoarthritis.
Sleep Apnea
Obesity is a significant risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition characterized by repeated episodes of blocked breathing during sleep.
Losing weight can reduce the severity of sleep apnea and improve overall sleep quality.
Certain Cancers
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, endometrial, and pancreatic cancer.
Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and physical activity can lower the risk of developing these cancers.
Chronic Kidney Disease
Obesity can lead to the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by increasing the risk of diabetes and hypertension, both of which are major causes of CKD.
Weight management is crucial in preventing the onset and progression of CKD.
Gallbladder Disease
Obesity increases the risk of gallstones and gallbladder disease due to higher cholesterol levels in bile and decreased gallbladder motility.
Weight loss, especially gradual and sustained, can reduce the risk of gallbladder disease.
Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions (including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels) that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
Obesity is a central component of metabolic syndrome, and weight loss is a key strategy in managing and preventing it.
Mental Health Disorders
Obesity can lead to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety due to societal stigma, low self-esteem, and physical health problems.
Conversely, mental health disorders can contribute to weight gain due to medications, emotional eating, and reduced physical activity.
